socket
Generally designed for heavier-duty work, socket chisels have handles that are easily detached. Socket chisel handles are typically held in place by friction between the taper of the handle and the taper of the socket. Because using the chisel generally forces the handle deeper into the socket, this isn’t usually an issue. The socket style handle of chisels can be found in large mortice chisels such as Ward, but also small bevel edge chisles such as EA Bergs.
Often workers removed or lost the handle and used just the steel which can lead to mushrooming of the steel. We sometimes turn replacement handles for socket chisels. This is pretty easy by measuring two diameters at known distances apart to give you the taper of the socket.
