Bedrock planes are a style of USA made Stanley planes that were sold by Stanley as being superior to their standard bench planes. They have a large mating surface between the frog and sole. The frog can be adjusted to close up the mouth. Unlike on normal bench planes, this can be done with the blade in place without releasing frog screws. As the mouth is adjusted the blade depth changes as the mating face is angled. They are easily identified because the sole has a square cheek and the levercap is marked Bedrock. However, earlier versions had rounded cheeks and no special marking on the levercap. Sold between between 1898 and 1943. At the time they were sold, Stanley added no more than 15% to the regular bench plane price. However, collectors and users now pay a significant premium for them as they were not sold in huge numbers.
