This vintage 3-foot folding rule is a practical and attractive traditional measuring tool manufactured from boxwood with brass end caps and brass hinge joints. Marked “Made in Holland”, it features both imperial and metric graduations, making it equally useful in traditional and modern workshops.
The outer faces are graduated in imperial measurements while the inner faces carry metric graduations, reflecting the growing adoption of metric standards during the twentieth century. Folding rules such as this were widely carried by carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, builders and engineers who appreciated their durability, portability and accuracy.
The warm colour of the aged boxwood and the attractive brass fittings give this rule the classic appearance associated with quality European measuring tools. Unlike modern tape measures, a folding rule provides a rigid straight edge that can be used directly for marking, setting out and checking dimensions on the workpiece.

Condition
Good vintage condition overall with clear graduations and attractive aged colour to the boxwood. The brass joints and end caps remain present and display honest age-related patina. The rule folds and functions correctly; however, movement of the timber over time means the sections no longer close tightly together. When folded there is approximately a 2mm gap at the end opposite the hinge. This is a cosmetic condition issue rather than a structural fault and is common in timber measuring tools of this age.
