Rare quality Australian made traditional builder’s level | Attractive Ensign-branded level with working cross vial and rich mahogany body
This vintage Ensign 10-inch spirit level is a handsome traditional measuring tool, combining a polished mahogany stock with brass top plates and both horizontal and cross-level vials. Compact enough for easy carrying yet substantial enough for practical workshop use, it is an excellent example of the classic levels once favoured by builders, joiners and cabinetmakers. From our research of the Brand name this is believed to be Australian made by the Norman Baker & Longhurst company who made builders tools mainly of wood, mitre boxes, and plasters tools (see ENSIGN – Directory of Australian Makers Database Search – Hand Tool Preservation Association of Australia Inc.). Australian-made measuring and levelling tools are far less commonly encountered than their British and American counterparts, adding additional appeal for collectors of Australian-made tools and workshop equipment.
The level is clearly marked “ENSIGN” on the brass top plate and retains its distinctive barrel-shaped cross vial, visible through the circular side window. This feature allowed the user to check level from multiple viewing angles without changing position, making it particularly useful for site and bench work.
The mahogany body displays a rich colour and pleasing grain, complemented by the warm patina of the brass fittings. Levels with this torpedo styling were produced throughout the twentieth century for tradesmen who valued accuracy, durability and portability. Today they remain highly collectable while still being entirely practical workshop tools.
Unlike many surviving examples, this level presents particularly well, retaining crisp lines, clean timber and intact brass fittings. The Ensign branding also adds interest for collectors of traditional measuring and levelling tools.

Condition
Very good vintage condition overall. The mahogany body retains an attractive colour and presents extremely well with only minor signs of age and use. The brass fittings remain complete and display a pleasing aged patina. Both the main vial and cross vial are present, with the liquid remaining bright and easily visible. Light cosmetic wear and a few minor handling marks are present, as expected from a genuine vintage tool, however overall this is a particularly clean and well-preserved example.
