Description
Marples 9″ Level (Possibly Walnut)
Compact English Spirit Level | Brass‑Fitted | All Vials Working
This Marples 9″ spirit level is a beautifully preserved example of traditional English layout tools. With its dark timber body — possibly walnut, based on colour and open grain — and finely machined brass top plate, it represents the classic Marples approach to toolmaking: durable, accurate, and visually refined.
The level features a central spirit vial set into a brass plate marked “Warranted – Pat. No. 428629 – Correct”, along with a second plate engraved “J. Rabone & Sons, Sheffield, Eng.” This combination is typical of mid‑century English level manufacture, where Marples sourced precision vials and plates from Rabone for certain models.
All vials are working correctly, making this not only a collectable piece but also a functional layout tool suitable for woodworking, cabinetmaking, and restoration work.
Key Features:

- Marples marked vial plate — engraved “W Marples & Sons, Sheffield, Eng.”
