Description
We think this is a Marples and Sons No. 2892 stop chamfer plane with fence, or is it a reproduction? It could be the Preston 360 chamfer plane with the wrong iron, but is it?
It’s incredibly crisp, all beech construction, considering it should be around 100 years old. We can find no marks on it and all the screws just look wrong – too modern. The Marples iron is spot on though. A lovely reproduction we believe which has been made around the iron . 1 1/4″ Iron is marked W. Marples & Sons with triple Shamrock and Hibernia warranted cast steel. The wedge does not fit perfectly in the throat and so this is not currently as capable a plane as it could be. Someone with the knowledge to make the required adjustments will be required to make it a great little user. We’ve tested this plane after taking pictures were taken some there are some minor use marks on the sole now.
Lovely potentially functional reproduction of Marples ‘top of the line’ chamfer plane with most of the trappings of the original, but not by the original tool manufacturer.
