The Silex No.98 is an adjustable beam marking gauge manufactured in Australia and intended for marking parallel lines on timber prior to sawing, chiselling, planing or joinery work. Surviving examples are relatively uncommon and are sought after by collectors of Australian-made woodworking tools as well as users looking for a practical and robust vintage marking gauge.
This example retains its distinctive Silex red-painted fence and metal beam construction. The adjustable fence is secured by a knurled locking screw, allowing the gauge to be set to a consistent distance from the edge of the workpiece. The steel marking point remains present.
Dated 1950s–1970s, this example bears the broad arrow mark of a military owned tool.

Condition
Good vintage condition overall. The marking points are present and the gauge appears substantially complete. There is paint loss to the red finish, general wear and workshop marks consistent with age and use. As with all vintage marking gauges, sharpening or adjustment of the marking point may be desirable before regular workshop use.
