The Stanley No.59 Doweling Jig was designed to simplify accurate dowel joint construction by guiding the drill bit precisely into the workpiece. By maintaining correct alignment and spacing, the No.59 helped woodworkers produce strong and repeatable dowel joints in furniture, cabinetry and general joinery applications.

Manufactured by Stanley, the No.59 became one of the best-known doweling jigs of the twentieth century and remains popular with both users and collectors today. The ingenious adjustable design allows the jig to be clamped to the workpiece while interchangeable drill guide sleeves accommodate different dowel sizes.

This example retains three original drill guide sleeves, including the 5/16″, 7/16″ and 1/2″ sizes. While not a complete set, these larger sizes remain useful for furniture and cabinetmaking applications. The jig itself appears substantially complete and retains the components necessary for practical workshop use with the supplied sleeves.  Although not shown it does include the drill depth clamp.

Doweling jigs such as the No.59 proved particularly popular before the widespread availability of biscuit joiners, pocket hole systems and modern doweling equipment. As a result, they remain an interesting example of Stanley’s efforts to provide practical solutions for accurate woodworking joinery.

Collectors of Stanley woodworking tools continue to seek the No.59, particularly examples that retain their original drill sleeves. Even though this example is incomplete, it remains both a useful workshop tool and a desirable addition to a Stanley collection.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall. The jig retains its main body, adjustment mechanism and three original drill guide sleeves. The supplied sleeves are marked 5/16″, 7/16″ and 1/2″. Please note that the set is incomplete and does not include the full complement of six sleeves originally supplied with the No.59. However, it does include the depth stop clamp, not pictured.  There is general workshop wear, minor surface marks and light oxidation consistent with age and use. Despite the missing sleeves, the jig remains a practical user tool and an attractive Stanley collectible.
