This genuine L.S. Starrett No.490 Protractor Head is a precision measuring and layout tool designed for use with Starrett combination square rules. Manufactured by The L.S. Starrett Co. Ltd. in Great Britain, the No.490 allowed craftsmen, engineers, machinists and pattern makers to accurately set, transfer and measure angles in workshop and field applications.
Featuring a finely graduated protractor scale and an integrated spirit level vial, the No.490 combines angle measurement and levelling functions in a single compact unit. The protractor head can be locked securely at the desired angle using the central clamping mechanism, while the separate locking screws ensure a stable and repeatable setting once adjusted.
Starrett introduced its combination square system in the late nineteenth century, and interchangeable heads such as the No.490 became standard equipment in engineering workshops throughout the world.
