Vintage Unbranded Jeweller’s Hand Vice – 4½” Long

This vintage unbranded jeweller’s hand vice is a compact yet surprisingly substantial clamping tool, measuring approximately 4½ inches (~115mm) in length. Designed to securely grip small components during filing, engraving, drilling, sawing or other smaller bench work. Hand vices such as this were a staple of jewellers, watchmakers, instrument makers and model engineers.
While this example carries no visible maker’s mark, it’s quite a substantial tool. Probably workshop-made or a trade-quality hand tool. The substantial jaws provide a firm grip on small workpieces, while the wing screw allows controlled clamping pressure. The jaws have a fine cross-hatching pattern cut into them for grip.
Examples like this are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly those with the pleasing weight and robust construction that make them practical workshop tools rather than lightweight hobby-grade replacements.

Condition
Good vintage condition overall with honest workshop wear, surface marks and patina consistent with age and use. The jaws align well and the clamping screw remains present and operational. The wing nut has been threaded a little off centre which makes the thing wobble as it is adjusted, but it secures against the brass washer with a please firmness. The spring mechanism is broken; however, the retaining screw and part of the original spring remain intact, making repair straightforward for its new owner. Despite this defect, the vice remains an attractive and good quality example of a traditional jeweller’s hand vice. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed assessment of condition.
