Description
This user-made hardwood plane is nearly 6 1/2″ by 2 inches wide and comes with a tapered iron by W Marples and Sons. The iron is 1.5″ or 38mm wide and in great condition. The blade is pitched at approximately 47 degrees making it a little steeper than a Stanley blade and therefore more suited to harder woods.
We are not sure what wood this is made from, but it is heavy for such a small plane at 600g. It could be ironbark or something similar. There is a matching wedge which is also nicely made. The plane has some small old wormholes and imperfections in it which suggests it was made from reclaimed wood. The body has been stamped with the owner (and possibly the maker’s) name – J Willoughby. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could sell it to a descendant of the maker?
The body has a bit of a European feel to it. The blade secures and releases nicely and this plane is bench ready.
