Up for sale is a beautifully preserved Stanley No. 54 Plow and Rabbet Plane. Manufactured during its brief production window between 1937 and 1950. Because the No. 54 had a much shorter production run than the ubiquitous No. 50, finding examples in this level of preservation is becoming increasingly difficult.
Key Features:
- Type: Highly sought-after early variant (pre-war) featuring the lever-style cutter adjustment mechanism. This mechanism was inherited from the early Stanley No. 50 design. Collectors favor this setup over the later-era sliding thumb-screw bracket.
- Nickel Plating: Exceptional. Retains 95%+ of its original nickel plating (although it is under a layer of dirt). Minor plating loss is mainly around the sharp outer edges and the high-friction area of the skate (normal for a tool of this age).
- Metalwork: There are no owner’s marks or initials on the metal surfaces.
- Cutters: Includes 7 of the 8 original cutters (1/8″ cutter missing).
- Accessories: The plane comes equipped with its original long arms/bars and the skate.
Condition Report
We haven’t cleaned this tool, so it comes to us as it was found. Please note that the 1/8″ plow cutter is missing from this set. Because the 1/8″ blade is the thinnest and most delicate in the lineup, it is the most frequently misplaced tool part over the decades. This represents a collectors tool that is unlikely to see use. If you are looking for a user, at this price you should almost be able to get a complete boxed No.50 which is a very similar plane. This plane does show a depth stop, which has been added by the previous owner as they were supplied without one – despite having all the hardware to take one.
