This Hockley Abbey No.1621 level is a well-made traditional levelling tool featuring a polished mahogany stock, substantial brass top plate and a centrally mounted spirit vial. At 12 inches in length, it offers a practical size for both workshop and site use while retaining the elegant proportions that make vintage levels so appealing to collectors today.
The level is marked “Hockley Abbey” together with “Warranted Correct No.1621”, identifying it as a product of the Hockley Abbey works of Birmingham, England. Hockley Abbey became closely associated with Chesterman, one of Britain’s best-known measuring tool manufacturers, and tools bearing the Hockley Abbey name are increasingly recognised by collectors of traditional British measuring and layout tools.
The relationship with Chesterman is particularly useful when dating examples such as this. Hockley Abbey levels are generally associated with pre-1963. Condition
Good vintage condition overall. The mahogany body retains an attractive colour and presents well, with only expected signs of careful workshop use. The brass top plate remains complete and displays a pleasing aged patina together with minor surface marks consistent with age. The markings remain visible and identifiable. The spirit vial remains present, serviceable, but a little cloudy. There are general cosmetic signs of age throughout, however the level remains an attractive and well-preserved example of a traditional British spirit level.
