This vintage 8-inch spirit level is a particularly attractive example of a traditional craftsman’s level, featuring exceptionally thick brass plates and a dense dark hardwood body that is believed to be ebony. Although unmarked, the quality of both the materials and workmanship suggests it was produced as a premium workshop tool rather than a budget trade item.
The level has a reassuring weight in the hand, thanks to the combination of substantial brass fittings and the dense timber body. This extra weight not only gives the tool a quality feel but also helps it sit securely on the workpiece when in use. The elegant proportions, polished brass fittings and dark timber make it equally appealing as a collector’s piece or display item.
Pocket levels of this style were commonly used by cabinetmakers, joiners, engineers and builders who required a compact yet dependable levelling tool. While many examples were marked by their manufacturers, others were supplied through retailers and merchants without a maker’s name, making positive attribution difficult today.
The spirit vial remains present and functional, although it exhibits some cloudiness consistent with age. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive and high-quality example of a traditional brass and hardwood level.
Without a maker’s mark, the manufacturer, country of origin and exact date of manufacture cannot be confirmed. However, the materials and construction are consistent with quality British and European levels produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Condition
Good vintage condition overall. The brass fittings remain sound and present well, displaying an attractive aged patina. The timber body is in excellent condition with only minor marks from use and handling. The spirit vial remains intact and contains fluid, although it is slightly cloudy.
