We’ve seen a few of these caulking irons, but they aren’t all crease versions by Ward & Payne. The crease is 2 1/4″ long by 7/32″ wide and in good shape. Heavy at just short of 400grams. Many inferior brands have splits and mushrooms where they have been pounded. Not this lovely example by the Ward & Payne. Ward & Payne, like Mathieson, had a long history of supplying tools to Australia during its booming growth years. Unfortunately, due to the consistency of the marks used by Ward & Payne all we can definitely say about this is that is was made between 1860 and 1970 when they shut up shop. However, our gut, the patina and the style tells us this has to be 100 years old or more. There’s a collection of these in the Powerhouse Museum.
