Description

Lovely little Moulson Brothers brass backed 10″ dovetail saw as a restoration project.  Moulson Brothers only made saws between 1828 and 1884 so this one is an old one. It appears to be all original except that at some point the handle angle was changed. We suspect that that additional hole in the plate has been drilled, dropping the rear split nut and the handle angle. We haven’t dismantled to check as brass split nuts can be fragile. Would be a very valuable and historic saw in the hands of the right restorer. Plate and back are good and reasonably straight, but there is a minor wobble between the handle and plate – tightening up the nuts of maybe even swelling the handle with oil is likely to take this wobble out. There are a few small chips out of the horn of the handle.

The brass back gives this a lovely weight (approx 350g).

There are a few cracks in the wood grain from drying out, not stress, but they are solid and would benefit from oiling. The handle is secure on the plate.

The teeth are all intact, and reasonably sharp.  Looks to be about 10tpi.  The plate is in surprisingly good condition, but could be further improved with a little gentle care. No evidence of any plate marking visible.

Not a difficult restoration for someone comfortable working with brass split nuts. Unfortunately, we don’t have the time at the moment.
