Description
Stanley No.99 Side Rebate Plane
Vintage Specialty Joinery Tool | Side Rabbet Plane with Repaired Handle and Replated Finish
This is a vintage Stanley No.99 side rebate (rabbet) plane, a specialized woodworking tool designed for trimming, widening, and fine-tuning dados, grooves, and rabbets. Featuring a unique offset configuration and fence control, it is an indispensable specialty item for traditional cabinetmakers and joiners.
This example has undergone some heavy historical workshop maintenance. The handle has previously been broken off and welded back into place (visible on the underside), after which the entire tool was cleanly replated. The handle now has a small kick in it, but it won’t affect use. It is fitted with an unbranded replacement cutting iron. The plating was apparently done with the front rail guide in place, so the screw won’t easily be shifted now.
Key Features:
- Specialized Side Rebate Design: Engineered to clean and square up the sides of dados, grooves, and stopped housings.
- Replated Finish: The cast-iron body has been cleaned and given a fresh protective plated finish across its textured surfaces.
- Replacement Iron: Outfitted with a functional, unbranded replacement cutting blade which is in good shape and will need just minimal sharpening to get bench ready.
- Historical Repair: Features a sturdy welded repair to the handle/grip section as noted, ensuring structural continuity.
Condition
This plane is in repaired and restored user condition. The handle has been previously broken and welded back on (with evidence visible on the underside), and the body has been subsequently replated. It includes an unbranded replacement iron and functions as a solid workshop tool for fine-tuning joinery and offered at a budget prices due to the repairs. Pretty plating hides ugly past.
