Description
Stanley Bailey No. 4 Type 14 Smoothing Plane – Restoration Project
Vintage Bench Plane | Sound Cast Iron Body with Australian-Made Replacement Iron and Broken Rear Tote
This is a classic Stanley Bailey No. 4 Type 14 smoothing plane, offering an excellent foundation for a restoration project or a workshop parts donor. Made in USA with the single-patent casting behind the frog (`U.S. Pat. Apr-19-10`), the heavy cast-iron body and sole remain structurally sound, clean, and flat. However, this particular specimen comes with notable historical damage and replacement components.
Most notably, the rear wooden tote handle has suffered a structural break at the base and will need to be repaired or replaced. Furthermore, the original cutting assembly has been swapped out for a later “Made in Australia” Stanley replacement iron and cap iron. Because of these factors, it is offered strictly as a fixer-upper project for a woodworker looking to bring a legendary pre-WWII style body back to life.
Key Features:
- Sound Type 14 Body: Features the desirable single-patent date casting behind the frog with an intact, clean sole.
- Australian Replacement Iron: Fitted with a later “Made in Australia” Stanley cutting iron and cap iron assembly.
- Project Status: Ideal restoration candidate requiring handle repair/replacement and standard workshop tuning.
- Solid Front Knob: Retains its classic hardwood front knob and brass adjustment hardware.
Condition
This plane is offered strictly in parts / restoration condition. The heavy iron body and frog are in great shape with minimal wear. The rear wooden handle is broken at the base and requires repair or replacement. The Australian-made cutting iron is clean and serviceable, but will need sharpening. Fix the handle and you have a great user. Fix the handle and replace the iron and you have a collectable plane.
As usual, refer to photographs for more detail.
