Description

Early Stanley Rule & Level Co. No. 55 Universal Combination Plane

Antique New Britain Manufacture | Original Metal Chest with Four Cutter Boxes and Extensive Cutter Set

This is a magnificent antique Stanley No. 55 Universal Combination Plane, representing one of the most ambitious and versatile hand tools ever produced. Built around an early Stanley Rule & Level Company plane body manufactured in New Britain, Connecticut, this set features attractive rosewood handles, nickel-plated fittings, and intricate castings.

Supplied in its original metal chest, the plane includes four original cutter boxes and an extensive cutter collection. The cutters survive in unusually clean condition with minimal corrosion. The set retains its long and short fence rods, auxiliary skate, fences, and numerous accessories, though it does not include a screwdriver—which aligns with the Rule & Level era specifications.

Key Features:
  • Early Rule & Level Co. Pedigree: Manufactured in New Britain, Connecticut, showcasing the classic early design and craftsmanship of Stanley’s flagship combination plane.  Expected to a little over 100 years old (circa 1925).
  • Original Metal Chest: Housed in its period metal storage chest, complete with four labeled original cutter boxes.
  • Extensive Cutter Set: Features a remarkably clean collection of cutters with minimal rust and strong remaining working length (note: No. 8 slitting cutter and No. 106 Grecian Ogee are absent).
  • Complete Accessory Suite: Includes long and short fence rods, main and auxiliary skates, rosewood handles, and adjustable fences, cam stop (with patent no.), nicker, etc and an additional newer beading stop.
Condition

This set is in very good antique condition. The plane body and rosewood elements are well-preserved, the cutters display exceptional cleanliness for their age, and the original metal chest exhibits honest paint loss and wear consistent with over a century of workshop history.  Apart from what has been noted this is considered complete.
