Vintage Unbranded Beech & Brass Mortice Marking Gauge

Traditional English-Pattern Joinery Gauge | Heavy Brass Fittings & Crisp Pins | Disston Styling

This quality vintage beechwood mortice marking gauge is an unbranded, finely made joinery tool closely reminiscent of classic Disston-style marking gauges. Crafted from dense European beech, it features good brass face strips on the stock, a brass thumbscrew lock, and a brass slide mechanism.

Fitted with very sharp, clean marking pins—this gauge allows for quick, high-precision layout of mortice and tenon joints in hardwood or softwood. The tool remains in solid, fully functional working order, displaying honest workshop age including minor rounding to the beech along the edge opposite the mortice pins, which does not affect the operation – we presume it was done for easier sighting of the pin.

Key Features:
  • Quality Beech & Brass Construction: Dense beechwood stock fitted with brass wear strips and heavy thumbscrew.
  • Sharp Mortice & Marking Pins: Excellent, crisp steel pins capable of scribing sharp layout lines across or along the grain.
  • Dual-Function Layout: Operates as a dual-pin mortice gauge or single-pin standard marking gauge on the reverse slide.
  • Classic Design: Unbranded vintage production sharing stylistic traits with premium Disston and English-pattern gauges.
Condition

Very good functional vintage condition. The pins are sharp and well-defined, the brass thumbscrew threads smoothly, and the slider moves cleanly. The wooden stock displays an honest patina with slight user added rounding to the timber edge on the side opposite the mortice pins and has an uncessary pin through the shaft (unknown reason). Fully operational for daily bench work or traditional joinery layout.

Refer to detailed photographs for pin sharpness, brassware finish, and timber condition.
